This project titled “Thank You for your Service” compares the monthly American death tolls from the beginning of when America got involved in WWII and the beginning of when Americans started dying from COVID-19. I was inspired to make this comparison when I thought of the movie “Saving Private Ryan”. At the end of the movie, the older protagonist (Ryan) visits the grave of someone who gave his life for him. Ryan asks his wife if the life he lived was worth the sacrifice of this man to which she replied that it had been.
The design of the project is meant to be reminiscent of the American flag, with the comparisons of the casualties making up the stripes of the flag. The user can use the slider to compare the casualties of WWII with the casualties of COVID-19. The descending stars are meant to encourage the viewer to scroll down to see the true tragedy of the situation.
